Me Before You pulled me in right from the start with its warmth and sincerity. It quickly became one of my favorite romantic dramas. Even knowing how the story would end, I held on to the hope that Will might change his mind and share the life he and Lou imagined together. That hope made the ending even more moving.
The actors fit their roles well. Emilia Clarke showed Louisa’s funny and caring side clearly. She was good in every scene. Sam Claflin gave Will a calm and steady performance that worked well with her. The film balances happy and sad parts in a way that feels natural.
One line I kept thinking about was, “You only get one life, it is actually your duty to live it as fully as possible.” Will tried to live fully despite his disability, especially with Lou. But he felt he had lost himself. He chose to end his life because he was exhausted and missed the future he once had.
Lou had spent her life putting others first, especially her family. Will gave her something she never gave herself before, the freedom to choose her own path. A conversation between Lou and her father captures the heart of the film:
“You cannot change what people are.”
“What can you do?”
“You love them.”
Lou loved Will no matter what happened. She stayed with him even though she knew he had made his decision. She wanted him to choose life, but she accepted what he wanted. In the end, Will told her to live her life fully and follow her own dreams. The movie makes you think about how love sometimes means letting go.
